Surgical Safety Checklist Implementation
Patient Safety First's report on implementation progress of the Surgical Safety Checklist is now available. The survey was conducted by an independent company in February-March this year and ninety-eight per cent of acute trusts in England took part. The aim of the survey was to identify how trusts have implemented the checklist, the perceived impact so far and Trust's experiences in introducing it. All trusts reported they are implementing the checklist, with one third reporting they have introduced the five step approach encouraged by Patient Safety First (which includes a pre-list briefing and post-list debriefing in addition to sign in, time out and sign out of the checklist for each patient).
Here is a link to the report and a note from Suzette Woodward, Patient Safety Director, NPSA, highlighting the NPSA’s continuing work to support Trusts in reducing avoidable harm in surgery. You will be aware, from the Stakeholder meeting held in April this year, that the NPSA is continuing a programme of work entititled 'Five Steps to Safer Surgery', to build on the five step approach promoted by Patient Safety First and to provide continuing support to Trusts.
In July, Patient Safety First are holding two online WebEx sessions to outline the support available through the NPSA's ‘Five Steps to Safer Surgery’ and to discuss with colleagues the successes and challenges experienced in their Trusts. The dates are Friday 23 July (13:00-14:00) and Friday 30 July (13:00-14:00). To register click here.
